This project was one of three travel shoots across North America for a branded documentary project. Our first leg brought us to Anchorage Alaska, where we filmed with talent at their home in the Chugach State Forest and squeezed in some pickup shots in the backcountry outside of Anchorage: Eklutna Lake.
Filming in such a remote location was challenging yet rewarding. During our day at Eklutna Lake and Bold Airstrip, we could not access the desired filming areas surrounding the serene glacial lake by car, so I hired ATVs to bring us to our space.
I was blown away by the beauty of Alaska, the wildness of its lands, and the rugged optimism of the people who call it home. During our pickups day, our small crew consisted of our director, DP, Drone Pilot, and a first AC named Paul Lawrence, originally from Norway, he made Alaska his home after graduating from USC film school, living in Alaska, and flying his Cessna 172 as a local pilot. At one point while we were filming in the backcountry he opened his van and made the whole crew a much-needed hot coffee.
To overcome logistical challenges I spent time with my leads to pre-scout locations on Google Maps, measured sunlight changes based on elevated terrain using FatMaps, and worked closely with the parks service to understand service routes, safety protocol and wildlife considerations around shooting in Grizzly country.
